Correction: This article initially stated that Bruce Mead was released on recognizance in October; he was actually released under supervision while awaiting sentencing, slated to check-in weekly.

ITHACA, N.Y.—One man is in custody after a Monday morning killing took place in the 100 block of Chestnut Street in Ithaca. It is Ithaca’s third homicide of 2022.

A press release from Ithaca Police Department’s Lieutenant Ted Schwartz states that just before 11:30 a.m., police were called to the location to respond to a stabbing incident. Officers and Bangs Ambulance attended to the victim, who was “in grave condition” upon responders’ arrival, but the victim died after being transported to a local hospital. Police identified the victim as Zacharias Moore, of Ithaca. He was 37 years old.

Police did not name the suspect in their press release, but sources have confirmed that Bruce Mead II, 29 years old, of Ithaca, was taken into custody on Monday in connection with the crime. He is currently at Tompkins County Jail. Sources also said that Moore and Mead are related. Mead has not yet officially been charged in connection with the killing.

In October, Mead pled guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in connection to another case, from 2021, when Mead was involved in an hours-long standoff at the Cayuga Garden Apartments on Chestnut Street. Before sentencing in that case, Mead was released under supervision by Tompkins County Judge Scott Miller, according to court records. The initial plea memorandum states that Mead is to be kept incarcerated while awaiting sentencing, signed Sept. 27, 2022, but was changed to an order for release under supervision that included weekly check-ins with Tompkins County Probation.

Mead had been given additional time at a hearing earlier this month, and was scheduled to be sentenced and taken into custody at some point early next year. Mead was not out on bail. His release has now been revoked and he is being held in the Tompkins County Jail, according to the police department’s press release.

Mead has also been arrested several other times, including for stabbing someone outside of DeWitt Mall in 2015.
