Dec. 6 update: The TCHD has located the dog.

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Tompkins County Health Department is trying to locate a dog that bit a person at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at Stewart Park.

The dog is described as a brown pit bull or pit bull mix, possibly named Chico and being walked on a leash by a woman with glasses and long, salt and pepper-colored hair.

The TCHD is attempting to verify vaccination status and health of the dog, and if the dog can be located and observed by the health department, the risk of rabies can be ruled out and no post-exposure therapy for the bitten person will be necessary.

Anyone who has information regarding the incident is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607)274–6688.

The TCHD would also like to remind the public of the importance of keeping pets up to date on rabies vaccinations.
