ITHACA, N.Y.—One man was taken into custody after an assault incident that occurred on Cherry Street at the Arthaus building Tuesday night.

Police were called to the building around 11:15 p.m. for a report of an active domestic incident. By the time they had arrived, the suspect 22 year-old, Joshua Payne, had left the scene but the victim described an assault that included punching, choking and burning hair, according to Ithaca police Sgt. Christopher Cady.

Payne was found a short time later on Chestnut Street after fleeing. He was interviewed and then arrested and charged with two misdemeanors, third-degree assault and criminal obstruction of breathing. More charges may be pending upon review.

The Ithaca Voice is awaiting clarification regarding whether Payne was released or held on bail or remanded to Tompkins County Jail.

Payne was also the subject of an arrest last week regarding an auto theft in Dryden that occurred in July.
