ITHACA, N.Y.—An Ithaca Police Department officer witnessed a motor vehicle crash that caused property damage during a routine patrol on East State Street on Saturday, July 9.

After the crash, one vehicle attempted to leave the scene, and the witnessing officer tried to conduct a traffic stop. The driver failed to comply and continued to drive at a low speed until eventually turning into a parking lot on Barton Place and stopping.

The driver was identified as 46-year-old Douglas Tallman of Moravia, New York, and it was determined that Tallman was driving while intoxicated. Tallman was arrested and charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree, passing a steady red signal, leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle crash and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Tallman was released and is scheduled to appear for arraignment in the Ithaca City Court at a later date, and no one was injured in the crash during this incident.

Separately, on July 7, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at Precision Filters on Cherry Street.

Witnesses told officers that at approximately 5 p.m., an unidentified man had approached the business and removed a green and black 2009 Kawasaki Model 650 Motorcycle with a New York registration from the parking lot, pushing it off the property and south on Cherry Street.

The suspect was described as a white male with a beard wearing all black clothing.

The area was searched for the motorcycle and suspect, though neither were found. An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Ithaca Police Department as soon as possible at (607)330-0000 or www.cityofithaca.org/ipdtips.
