ITHACA, N.Y.—The Tops grocery store location on South Meadow Street in Ithaca will be closing on May 31, 2022, according to Tops officials. The news was first reported by

The Tops location in Lansing next to the Shops at Ithaca Mall is not impacted by the decision. The grocer’s lease is up at the end of May, and it has decided not to renew.

“The decision was not made lightly and is in no way a reflection of the performance or dedication of our associates at this location,” wrote a Tops spokesperson to The Ithaca Voice. “There are no additional plans for store closures. All of the impacted associates will be offered positions in other areas of the company.”

Specific reasons were not given for the decision not to renew, though Tops in general has been experiencing several closures around central New York, particularly since the company went through a merger late last year.

The closing also exacerbates one of the oft-cited problems of Ithaca: the lack of many grocery store options. In terms of large-scale grocery spots, Tops closing leaves Ithaca with Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, GreenStar’s new West End location and Aldi (as well as the WalMart grocery section), and none are truly in downtown Ithaca.
