ITHACA, N.Y.—For the second consecutive year, a Cornell Big Red lacrosse player was the top pick in the National Lacrosse League draft, as Jonathan Donville was the first to hear his name called on Saturday night.

Donville, a 2021 graduate, was selected by the Panther City Lacrosse Club with the first overall pick. Panther City is an expansion team that is debuting this season, based in Fort Worth, TX. The previous year, Cornellian Jeff Teat had also been picked #1 overall by the New York Riptide.

Donville’s college career was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, which ended his junior season before the season completed. There was no lacrosse season during the 2021 year, again due to the pandemic. He hails from Ontario, Canada.

“Jon is an incredible talent that has earned everything that he has gotten in this game through hard work and humility,” said men’s lacrosse head coach Conor Buczek, according to the Cornell Athletics Department. “I’m so proud of him and know this is just the first of many accomplishments and accolades that he will receive in his professional career.”

The National Lacrosse League is one of three professional lacrosse leagues in America. There will still be plenty of chances to see Donville in action for locals, as the NLL has teams based in Rochester, Buffalo and Albany.
