ITHACA, N.Y.—Ithaca Police are looking for more details regarding an armed robbery and attempted carjacking that occurred in the late hours of Thursday night in the 200 block of East Seneca Street in downtown Ithaca.

Police claimed that they responded to an armed robbery attempt around 10:53 p.m. on May 6. Once on scene, police learned that a victim had been accosted in the parking lot across from the Seneca Street Parking Garage, just off the Commons, during a robbery attempt and that a firearm had been shown.

According to police, two suspects approached the victim near his car in the parking lot. One pointed “what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun” at the victim and demanded his backpack, wallet and money.

The victim, police claimed, refused and did not turn over any property. That’s when the second suspect, who was unarmed, grabbed a lanyard from around the victim’s neck, ripping it away from him and stealing his keys. With those keys, the suspects tried to steal the victim’s car, though the victim “pulled one of the suspects from the driver’s seat, and held him down on the ground until the victim let him go so that he could call 911 for assistance.”

Police claimed that both suspects fled on foot and escaped with some of the victim’s keys. The description of the suspects is as follows: the one who displayed a firearm was described as a 5’8″-5’10” man of unknown race, between 150-175 pounds and around 40 years old. He was wearing a black hoodie with a ponytail.

The second suspect was a Black man, about 5’9″, with a light grey hoodie.

At this time, police have announced that the investigation is ongoing, with no further details available. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the Ithaca Police Department.
