ITHACA, N.Y.—The City of Ithaca has announced that two water mains have broken in downtown Ithaca and there will be slight traffic disruptions and water service changes Friday as the repair work is being done.

The two main breaks took place at the intersection of North Cayuga and East Jay Streets, as well as the intersection of North Aurora and East Court Streets.

The following traffic changes will result until 3 p.m. on Feb. 26, the estimated time of completion.

  • E. Jay Street between N. Cayuga and Utica Street will be closed to thru traffic.
  • N. Cayuga Street will be restricted to one lane of traffic.
  • E. Court Street between N. Aurora Street and Terrace Place will be closed to thru traffic.
  • N. Aurora Street will be restricted to one lane of traffic.

“Water service may be interrupted while the main is being repaired,” the City of Ithaca said. “Residents in the area may experience low or no water pressure. Once the work is complete, the system will be flushed which may result in brown or rusty water. At that time, residents are encouraged to run the cold water tap in their bathtub until the water runs clear. Do not run hot water as sediment could be drawn into the water heater. The City will notify residents if further action is required.”
