TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y.—Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday the allotment of COVID-19 vaccine doses that will be distributed by New York State to each region across the state during the first wave of deliveries.

Overall, 170,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be sent throughout the state, including 4,500 to the Southern Tier region, which includes Tompkins County. That’s actually the third lowest allocation in the state, just in front of the North Country region and the Mohawk Valley region. New York City and the Long Island region will receive the highest allocation (predictably), with 72,000 and 26,500 respectively.

Cuomo reiterated that nursing home residents, staff members and general healthcare workers will be prioritized to receive the vaccination. In order to be effective, people must receive two shots three weeks apart—Cuomo said another 170,000 doses are expected to ship in the coming weeks to fulfill the two-shot requirement. The number of allocated doses is based on the reported prioritized population size.

County spokesperson Dominick Recckio said they are not yet aware how many of the 4,500 will be sent to Tompkins County. Last week, Public Health Director Frank Kruppa said that the county was working with local healthcare facilities to figure out how many doses the county would be requesting from the state.

According to Cuomo on Wednesday, if the federal Food and Drug Administration approves the vaccine Thursday, Dec. 10, then the vaccine will be passed to a board of state-appointed medical professionals before it is distributed widely in New York. Cuomo said he hopes the double approval will satiate some people’s lingering suspicions over the swiftness with which the COVID-19 vaccine was developed. Delivery could start as soon as this weekend.

The full region allocations will receive as follows:

  • New York City region – 72,000
  • Long Island region – 26,500
  • Mid-Hudson region – 19,200
  • Western New York region – 14,500
  • Finger Lakes region – 11,150
  • Capital region – 7,850
  • Central New York region – 6,400
  • Southern Tier region – 4,500
  • Mohawk Valley region – 4,200
  • North Country region – 3,700
