ITHACA, N.Y.—Ithaca Police apprehended and arrested a man who they have now charged with armed robbery during an incident in the Wegmans parking lot Friday morning.

Police located a female victim in the parking lot of the Wegmans around 10:15 a.m. The woman said she had been sitting in her car during a break from work when a man she didn’t know entered her car uninvited. The man then produced a knife and “pointed it at her in a threatening manner.”

Subsequently, the woman left the car and ran back towards Wegmans. The man then got into the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle away. The woman was uninjured.

Investigators later found the vehicle in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express, over a mile away from where it was stolen. The car was unoccupied at the time.

After that, Jason Gassner, 36, was arrested at a house on Spencer Road and charged in connection with the incident. Police did not specify what evidence connected him to the crime. He was charged with first degree robbery, a violent felony.

Gassner was arraigned and charged, then remanded to Tompkins County Jail without bail. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 16.
