ITHACA, N.Y. –– On Tuesday night Ithaca police and firefighters responded to a suspicious fire in Collegetown which they now say is not the result of criminal activity.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday night the Ithaca Police Department responded to the scene on Catherine Street where the Ithaca Fire Department was already on site and had extinguished a flame in a trash can on the porch of the residence prior to police arrival.

“Information and evidence uncovered during this investigation indicates that fire was caused by a chemical reaction from construction debris that had been left in (the) garbage can,” a press release from IPD states.

Police have officially closed their investigation as of Friday.
