ITHACA, N.Y. — 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East endorsed Tompkins County Legislator Anna Kelles for New York State Assembly District 125, her campaign announced on Monday.
“Anna Kelles, understands health care workers’ needs,” said Tammy Ackers, member of the Political Endorsement Recommendation Committee at United Healthcare Workers East. “As a CNA I have many worries and concerns. Anna listened to my frustrations, my fears.”
Ackers added that she feels confident in Kelles’ ability to fight for the rights of healthcare workers.
“Every day, the members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East save lives, deliver babies and care for the sick, seniors and people with disabilities. They are frontline caregivers in hospitals, nursing homes, home care, clinics, pharmacies and all other areas of the healthcare industry,” said Kelles. “I am proud to have their endorsement, and will continue to work with them in our region.”
Kelles has also picked up the endorsements of actor and former New York State Gubernatorial Candidate Cynthia Nixon, Eleanor’s Legacy, The Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 267, The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 3, The Tompkins-Cortland Building & Construction Trades Council and Working Families Party.
The County Legislator is one of the seven candidates for the Democratic ticket after the longtime Assemblymember Barbara Lifton announced her retirement. The other candidates are Jordan Lesser, the former Legislative Counsel to Lifton; Lisa Hoeschele of Cortland; Seph Murtagh, City of Ithaca Alderperson; Jason Leifer, Dryden Town Supervisor; Beau Harbin, Cortland County Legislator; local attorney Sujata Gibson.
The primary will be held on June 23. Due to COVID-19, all voters are able to request absentee ballots and early voting begins on June 13.
