ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Health Department is seeking information following a dog bite incident on Sunday at the F.R. Newman Arboretum.
The dog is described as a black and white pit bull or pit bull mix weighing approximately 40 to 50 lbs. It was accompanied by a woman in her 20s or 30s and was on a black leash about 6 feet in length, according to a statement from TCHD Monday afternoon.
The pit bull was approached by a Samoyed and was involved in an altercation with that dog. A man and woman were bitten when breaking up the altercation, says TCHD.
County health employees say they want to verify vaccination status and health of the biting dog over a ten-day period. If the dog can be located and observed to be healthy by the Department, the risk of rabies infection can be ruled out and rabies post-exposure treatment for the person who was bitten will not be necessary.
Anyone with additional information regarding this dog is asked to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
