I wanted to take this important opportunity to share my thoughts and sadness regarding the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd, who died while being placed under arrest by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department.
The viral video was utterly appalling and abhorrent to watch and the actions of the police officer(s) involved are in no way consistent with any appropriate arrest and control tactics nor any level of human decency. I have been sharing these thoughts with those who have asked my opinion on the matter and I feel that it is important as Chief of Police to provide these same thoughts publicly.
Reverence for life must always be our top priority and all persons should be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion; anything less will not be tolerated within the law enforcement profession. I vividly recognize that the nation is hurting right now so I join my colleagues, the community, and those who are in pain by praying with them for peace and healing.
All of us at the IPD are honored to serve this community and we thank everyone for their continued support during these very challenging times. Our goal will always be to keep Ithaca safe and to continue to improve our small corner of the world through our service.
