ITHACA, N.Y. –– In a message to the campus community, it was announced that Dining Services employee Don Mooney has passed away.

Mooney was a well-known figure at Ithaca College, and was beloved by thousands of students. In Don’s over 12  years as a Dining Services employee, he greeted thousands of students and staff at Towers and Terrace Dining Halls, always upbeat and cheerful. Don offered many songs, words of advice, small poems and simple friendly greetings while swiping meal cards.

According to the college’s statement, he died May 1 after a short illness.

In 2017, students, faculty, alumni nominated Don as one of their favorite Ithaca College icons –– celebrating this achievement at IC’s 125 Anniversary celebration.

Scott McWilliams, Director of Dining Services, remembers Don’s devotion to students and the college.

“Ithaca College Dining Services is deeply saddened by the news of Don Mooney’s passing. Don always knew how to make such a wonderful impact on whoever crossed his path. His passion was making sure that everyone around him was in a better place than he was. The Ithaca College community will miss him dearly. We send our deepest condolences to Don’s family and friends.”

At the request of the family, there will not be a formal memorial service.
