ITHACA, N.Y.— Tompkins County Health Department has given additional info about Tompkins County’s lone case of COVID-19.
In a statement Sunday afternoon, TCHD said it was a member of the Ithaca College community who tested positive after they became symptomatic on March 5.
“The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is a member of (Ithaca College’s) community. The individual is currently in mandatory isolation in their home and became symptomatic on March 5, right before the start of Ithaca College’s spring break,” said a statement from TCHD sunday. “The Health Department Public Health Nurses conducted the contact investigation and are now in daily contact with any individuals who were identified as possibly being exposed to this individual on March 5 or later. The nurses will continue to evaluate whether any further steps such as self-quarantine or testing are necessary.”
The county says they are supporting Ithaca College in handling the case.

“I know this recent case brings up many concerns and questions for the public. It is important to know that the Health Department is working diligently and does not believe that there is any general risk to the wider community,” states Frank Kruppa, Public Health Director. “We will continue to work closely and support Ithaca College to ensure that necessary steps are taken.”
President Shirley Collado confirmed the news in a letter to the campus community on Sunday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you know that a member of our Ithaca College campus community has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. We were notified of this yesterday, March 14, by the Tompkins County Health Department. While news like this is not necessarily unexpected, I know it may hit home for a lot of us in a way that makes this situation very real. I ask that you please continue to take good care of yourself and your loved ones as we all navigate this truly challenging moment.
TCHD reminds residents to continue to distance themselves socially, wash their hands regularly and stay home if you feel sick.
CORRECTION: We erroneously stated the individual that tested positive was a student. Communications from both TCHD and Ithaca College did not specify if it was a student, faculty or staff member. We regret the error.
