ITHACA, N.Y. –– Sergeant Anthony Piedigrossi of the Cornell University Police Department was honored with the Frank G. Hammer Officer of the Month award Monday afternoon in recognition of his long career, as he prepares for retirement in March.
Piedigrossi began his career at Cornell in 1988 as a University Service Officer where he served as a telecommunications officer on the midnight shift. In 1990, Piedigrossi was promoted to patrol officer –– a position he held for 7 years, while also working to become one of CUPD’s first bike patrol officers.
In 1997, Piedigrossi was promoted again to the rank of sergeant during which time he continued his work as a bike patrol officer before transitioning to the job he holds today of Bike Patrol Coordinator, in 1999. Piedigrossi also held the position of Special Projects Coordinator for a time in the 2010s, overseeing crime prevention and facilitating large university events such as convocation, and Cornell’s 150th anniversary celebration.
Also in 1999, Piedigriossi was honored with a Director’s Citation Award for his role in the arrests of three individuals who had been breaking into local businesses in the Dryden area.
“This, as well as many other events, are excellent examples of his dedication to law enforcement and to our mission of service to the local community,” CUPD Patrol Sergeant Steven Shirley said in his nomination letter for Piedigrossi.
Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, and a few retired CUPD officers, were on hand for the ceremony to celebrate Piedigrossi’s career.
Deputy Chief of CUPD Jefferey Montesano, who presented Piedigrossi with the award on Monday, thanked the officer for not only his service, but his guidance as a mentor.
“Thank you for your service, leadership, wisdom and most importantly –– your friendship,” said Montesano.
Piedigrossi reflected on his 32-year career with pride.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet and experience a lot,” he said. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve the Cornell community and the community in general throughout the years.”
