ITHACA, N.Y. –– Officer Barry Banfield of the Ithaca Police Department was promoted to lieutenant on Tuesday.

“I’m honored that I’ve been given this opportunity. I can appreciate that policing is harder and more complicated than ever before and the officers on the front line are bearing the brunt of these challenges,” said Banfield. “I see my job as being vital to helping my fellow officers to keep being their best while making sure IPD continues to be a progressive department focused on giving Ithaca the highest level of service we can.”

He was sworn in as a lieutenant in a ceremony at the Ithaca Police Department headquarters.

Banfield has been recognized in the past for his work to crack down on both drunk and distracted driving by the Ithaca Kiwanis club and Stop DWI Tompkins.

As lieutenant, the biggest day to day change for Officer Banfield will be that he will now oversee and lead the entire overnight patrol shift.

“I think what I’m looking forward to most with the promotion is being able to have a larger role in making the department get better and better for the officers working here and for the community we serve,” Banfield said.
