ITHACA, N.Y. –– Authorities responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle near the East Ithaca Recreation Way on Tuesday that saw one person airlifted.

At approximately 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 900 block of Mitchell Street in the Town of Ithaca for a personal injury motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies determined that a 2012 Volkswagen was traveling east on Mitchell Street and failed to stop for a pedestrian who was walking across the Mitchell Street crosswalk. The victim was struck in the crosswalk.

The driver of the Volkswagen has been identified as Marguerite C. Layton, age 85, of Ithaca, NY. Layton was not injured in the crash and was subsequently charged with failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian.

The extent of injuries to the pedestrian are unknown. They were then airlifted to a local trauma center.

Authorities are yet to release the name of the victim.

The New York State Police, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance assisted on scene.
