ITHACA, N.Y. — A suicidal 15-year old girl has been charged with assault after breaking the nose of an Ithaca Police Department officer while being detained Tuesday night.

IPD Officers responded to the 600 block of Chestnut Street in response to a complaint of a suicidal female. Officers located the subject of the call, a 15-year-old resident. After speaking with her and her father, officers determined she was a danger to herself and took her into custody under Mental Hygiene Law.

While officers escorted her out of the house, to be transported to the hospital, she became uncooperative and slammed her head into the officer, breaking his nose.

The teen was transported to Cayuga Medical Center via Bangs Ambulance without further incident. She made several statements in the ambulance regarding breaking the officer’s nose, according to the press release.

The IPD Officer was treated at Cayuga Medical Center and released but has been restricted from work due to this injury.

The female has been charged with Assault in the second degree and this prosecution will be done through the Juvenile Court System.

IPD will not be releasing additional information regarding the defendant due to her age.
