(Update 8 p.m.) — This story has been updated with additional information from Ithaca Police.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Tompkins County Human Services Building, 320 W. State Street, was evacuated Friday afternoon due to a report of a suspicious package.

Police received a report of a package left on the ground near the building’s entrance at about 1:40 p.m. Friday.

The building houses the Department of Social Services and Probation Department.

Police said the package was about the size of a shoebox, and officers could not immediately determine its contents.

“Out of an abundance of caution officers cordoned off the area and evacuated the building,” and IPD press release stated.

It was determined that the package contained medical supplies packaged for disposal. It was safely disposed of.

The Ithaca Fire Department and Ithaca Police Department investigated, and the Endicott Bomb Squad assisted on scene.
