TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. – The Tompkins County Immigrant Rights Coalition Working Group, with the co-sponsorship of the T.C. Workers’ Center, the Multicultural Resource Center, DSA (Democratic Socialists of America), and SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), has organized a public forum about the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport expansion project. The forum will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 25 in the Tompkins County Public Library’s Borg Warner room.

Participants will discuss troubling implications of the proposed airport expansion. Information about the expansion project and some of the perspectives motivating the coalition’s urgency can be found through the airport’s website and in op-eds written by Patricia Rodriguez and by Shannon Gleeson.

The event organizers are concerned about the implications for the safety and rights of immigrants in the Tompkins community with the official invitation of a federal Customs and Border Protection facility to Ithaca. Participating groups are anxious to get more complete answers to the question: Whose interests does the expansion serve, especially in light of both natural (environmental impact) and social environmental concerns?

Organizers think these are issues which Ithaca Voice readership is invested in, and urge all to participate at the library on Monday, March 25. There will be time for public discussion.
