ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Health Department is seeking information about a dog that bit a person on University Avenue around 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 14 to rule out rabies.

The dog was described as looking like a German Shepherd or Malinois and was being walked by a young woman.

The department needs to identify the dog within a 10-day period to verify its vaccination status. If an employee can confirm that the dog is healthy and vaccinated, they can rule out the risk of rabies and the person who was bitten will not need medical treatment for exposure to the virus.

Anyone with information regarding this dog is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
