ITHACA, N.Y. —  Ready to get cheesy? With great enthusiasm, Foodnet Meals on Wheels announces the 6th Annual Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl to take place 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at Ithaca High School’s cafeteria. The Bowl has become a local favorite March tradition in Ithaca.

Community members of all ages spend the afternoon listening to live music, letting the kids play in the children’s corner, and indulging in delicious mac ‘n cheese dishes from a variety of local restaurants and caterers. Event attendees vote on who makes the best bowl in town.  Even the children can take part in the competition by naming a “Kid’s Choice Award.”

The Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl concept was adopted by the Foodnet Board of Directors after learning about a similar event in the Albany area. Ithaca is home to so many fantastic restaurants, and the bowl seemed like a natural fit for this community.  Six years later, Foodnet is proud to say that the bowl has grown into an annual community event.

The Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl event coincides with Meals on Wheels America’s March for Meals campaign. According to Meals on Wheels America, for more than 45 years, senior nutrition programs like Foodnet have delivered nutritious meals and services to seniors at risk of hunger and isolation in virtually every community in the country. The March for Meals campaign aims to help raise community awareness and support to help meet the rising demand for services.

The Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl is Foodnet’s largest community fundraising event, and it is directly aligned with the organization’s mission. The organization delivers nearly 700 daily nutritious meals to over 400 older adults and others throughout Tompkins County. Foodnet’s services help to alleviate senior hunger, ensure that supportive services are readily accessible, and enable individuals to maintain their quality of life without isolation. Foodnet’s nutrition services focus on creating conditions that foster adequate nutrition for healthy aging, and prevention or delay of chronic disease.

Executive Director Jessica Gosa said, “We continue to feel so fortunate to have such an amazing community behind our work. Each year, I am especially touched by the generosity of our restaurant and caterer community who make our event a delicious success. I can’t think of a better way to promote our mission, raise funds, and to celebrate with our community.”

Last year, the event had a great turnout of attendees of all ages, and raised approximately $26,000.  All proceeds of the event will be used to further Foodnet’s mission.
