TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. – With Tompkins County looking to get over a foot of snow and facing subzero temperatures over the weekend, area schools, businesses and organizations are announcing closings.

Several places, including area schools and government offices, were already due to close Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Heavy snow bands are expected to reach the region midday Saturday and to continue through Sunday evening. High winds will reduce visibility, potentially causing whiteout conditions, and the windchill will be around 20 degrees below zero.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Tompkins County from noon Saturday through 4 p.m. Sunday.

“A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service warning says.

A list of specific closings and cancellations is below, but Tompkins residents should plan to avoid all unnecessary travel during the worst of the storm.

Up to date information about road conditions is available by calling 511.

Odd/even parking is in effect in the City of Ithaca until further notice. Residents can sign up for alerts through the Swift911 system.

Overnight parking restrictions are in effect on Cornell’s Campus through the winter.
