DRYDEN, N.Y. — Emergency responders from Varna, Ithaca and Cornell worked together to rescue a dog who had fallen down an embankment Sunday off of the Monkey Run Trail in Varna.
The Varna Fire Department and Cornell Environmental Health and Safety responded to report at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday from a man that said his dog fell off a cliff while hiking. The dog, “Finn,” had fallen about 50 feet down an area called the “Varna Cliffs,” off of Freese Road. Because of the steep terrain, the Ithaca Fire Department High Angle Rope Rescue Team was called in to help.
The Ithaca Fire Department said firefighters set up a rope system at the top of the cliffs and one rescuer rappelled down to secure the dog in a harness. Ithaca and Varna firefighters then pulled the rescuer and dog to the top. The dog was taken to Cornell Animal Hospital for care.
In a news release, the Ithaca Fire Department said local first responders, “remind person and pet alike, to be careful this winter when walking on area trails. Know where you are and always carry a cell phone.”
