UPDATE (12:30 p.m.) — A Subaru sedan collided with a TCAT bus early Tuesday morning after running a red light at the intersection of West Green and South Meadow streets, according to the Ithaca Police Department.
The car was traveling north on South Meadow when it crashed into the side of the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit Route Route 21 bus, which was traveling east on West Green Street. The bus then collided with a tree on West Green Street across from Dunkin’ Donuts. The crash occurred at about 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Eight bus passengers, including the driver who sustained a leg injury, reported minor injuries. Five were transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
The driver of the Suburu was not injured and was issued a ticket for running a red light.
Patty Poist, communications and marketing manager for TCAT, said their operations manager and transit supervisors were on scene. Poist said TCAT General Manager Scot Vanderpool alerted the National Transportation Safety Board in Albany, which is protocol when there are injuries.
Poist said the crash did cause some delays initially, but all routes are back to normal.
All roads have re-opened to traffic.
The Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department, Bangs Ambulance and Dryden Ambulance responded to the scene.
