UPDATE (11:06 a.m.) — The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that one person was killed in a crash early Thursday morning on the 2500 block of Mecklenburg Road in Enfield.
The crash involved one car at about 4:57 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, the sheriff’s office said. Only one person was in the vehicle. The sheriff’s office said the operator of the vehicle was traveling west on Route 79 when they left the road and struck a nearby residence.
The occupants of the residence were transported by Bangs Ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the driver.
Mecklenburg Road was closed between Black Oak Road and Buck Hill Road for several hours Thursday morning, but the road had reopened in both directions by about 9:30 a.m.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
The Enfield Fire Department, Bangs Ambulance, Tompkins County Medical Examiner’s Office and New York State Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
