ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell University Police have arrested an 18-year-old man who while naked from the waist down allegedly pinned down two women near the Robert Purcell Community Center.

Police were notified “of a disturbance” at about 4:40 p.m. Sunday by the area of Robert Purcell Community Center on Cornell’s North Campus. When officers arrived, they said they found Saano E. Murembya, 18, naked from the waist down. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of some type of drug.

Witnesses told police that Murembya had accosted at least two women by throwing them to the ground and pinning them so they could not escape. A passerby was able to intervene and pull Murembya off of one of the victims, police said.

Murembya was taken to Cayuga Medical Center by Bangs Ambulance for a medical evaluation. When he was released, he was arrested by Cornell University Police and charged with two counts each of unlawful imprisonment, a misdemeanor, and first-degree attempted sexual abuse, a felony.

Murembya was arraigned in Ithaca City Court and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail on $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond.
