ITHACA, N.Y. — The man who fell into Cayuga Inlet and was rescued by police and firefighters last week has died, police confirmed Thursday.

On Friday afternoon, members of the Ithaca Police Department and Ithaca Fire Department responded to the Cayuga Inlet in the 100 block of South Fulton Street in Ithaca, in the area of the Jungle, for a report of a person in the water.

Crews that arrived on the scene were able to retrieve the man from the water and bring him to shore. He was not conscious or breathing when recovered, the IPD said previously. Bangs Ambulance personnel transported the man to Titus Flats where he was flown by helicopter to a regional trauma center.

However, police said Thursday that the man, identified as 49-year-old James Terry Jr., succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

According to police, a death investigation and autopsy did not “reveal anything suspicious in nature regarding the cause of death.”
