ITHACA, N.Y. — Ithaca firefighters extinguished a garage fire on Danby Road on Monday night. One firefighter was injured in the fire and a pet did not make it.

The fire started as a garage fire around 10 p.m. on the 1100 block of Danby Road in the Town of Ithaca. When firefighters arrived on scene, they began to extinguish and ventilate the smoke from the structure, the Ithaca Fire Department said.

All of the occupants were able to get out of the building except for a cat. Firefighters were able to rescue the cat and used a pet oxygen mask. The cat was brought to the Cornell Companion Animal Hospital for further treatment.

Unfortunately, in an update later the Ithaca Fire Department said the cat did not make it.

One firefighter also suffered a minor injury and was treated at Cayuga Medical Center.

The fire was contained to the garage. Bangs Ambulance and New York State Police stood by at the scene. Crews from Newfield and Cayuga Heights fire departments stood by at the Central Station in Ithaca to cover other calls and off-duty firefighters were called in.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
