NEWFIELD, N.Y. – A Newfield man was arrested this week after a New York State Police investigation revealed he stole several thousand dollars of unemployment benefits.

Ransome S. VanRiper, 40, was arrested on Wednesday at 9:56 a.m. and is charged with felony third-degree grand larceny.

Police say VanRiper is accused of stealing over $7,000 dollars in unemployment benefits in 2014 while he was still employed.

Reports say VanRiper was arrested after he turned himself into police on an active search warrant. He was arraigned in Tioga County Court and later released on probation.
