TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — Every year, Tompkins County takes time to honor the people who gave their lives in service to their country. There are events, parades and ceremonies planned across Tompkins County.

This year, Memorial Day is Monday, May 28.


The Tompkins County Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Dewitt Park in Ithaca. Before that, the VFW Post 961 will host ceremonies at local cemeteries leading up to the Dewitt Park ceremony. At 7 a.m., veterans will be at Ithaca City Cemetery. At 9 a.m., they will be at Coddington Road. At 9:30 a.m., they will be at East Lawn Cemetery.

Ithaca City Cemetery Cleanup & Tour — From 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday, join volunteers to beautify and restore Ithaca’s oldest burial ground by picking up trash, clearing brush and cleaning headstones. Volunteers should meet at the shed just above the burial vaults.

All ages are welcome. Attendees are advised to wear closed-toe shoes and bring bug spray, work gloves, sunscreen and bottled water. A 45-minute tour of the cemetery will begin at the main gate on University Avenue at 12:15 p.m.


On Saturday, Lion Legacy is hosting “A Walk to Remember” from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dryden High School Track.

For the annual parade and memorial service, the line up starts at 10 a.m. Monday on Highland Drive. The parade will head down Main Street at 10:30. At 11 a.m., a memorial service will take place on the village green. At noon, there will be a community luncheon the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary.


Memorial Day services this year will be the same as last year.

The Groton American Legion Post 800 will begin services at the Graves Memorial at 9 a.m. Services will continue at the following locations and times: 9:15 a.m. Bird Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. North Lansing Cemetery; 9:45 a.m. West Groton Rural Cemetery, 10 a.m. Peruville Cemetery; 10:15 a.m. Stonehedges Golf Course; 11 a.m. McLean Cemetery; 11:15 a.m. East Groton Cemetery (Route 222); 11:30 a.m. St. Anthony’s Cemetery; 11:45 a.m. Groton Rural Cemetery; noon Groton Nursing Home; 12:15 p.m. back at Groton American Legion.


Newfield Memorial Day Celebration & Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Newfield High School Auditorium. At 10:45 a.m. the parade line up begins. At 11 a.m., the parade will go from Newfield schools to Woodlawn Cemetery. An outdoor service will be held at the cemetery.


The Memorial Day Parade will line up at the Trumansburg Farmers Market at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The parade will march to Grove Cemetery promptly at 10 a.m. American Legion Post 770 will host an open house after the ceremony.


⋅ The Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management and the Recycling & Solid Waste Center (RSWC) will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day. There will be no curbside recycling collection Monday.

Recycling collection will take place a day late for the remainder of the holiday week. That means if your regularly scheduled collection day is Monday, recycling will be picked up on Tuesday; regular Tuesday collection will take place Wednesday, and so on.

The Tompkins County Public Library will be closed Saturday through Monday for Memorial Day. The library will reopen at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. For more information, and to access the library’s online educational and entertainment resources, visit

Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit will not have service on Monday for Memorial Day. Administrative offices will also be closed. Services will resume and offices will reopen Tuesday.
