ITHACA, N.Y. — First responders are at the Fall Creek Gorge near Willard Way for a recovery mission after a college-aged male was found dead this afternoon.

Officials were called to the scene just after 1:30 p.m. when a passerby noticed the man while enjoying a view of the gorge from a nearby bridge.

Vince Monticello, deputy chief of the Ithaca Police Department, said officials were dispatched to the area shortly afterward and determined that the male died in the gorge recently. The IPD, Cornell University Police, Bangs Ambulance, and the Ithaca Fire Department are at the scene.

“We’re in the early stages of the investigation,” he said.

The roadway is supposed to be closed for the next several hours as police investigate the scene and a medical examiner reviews the body.

Monticello said police are still working to identify the person.

John Carberry, spokesperson and senior director of Media Relations and News, said in an emailed statement, “Cornell University Police joined with the Ithaca Police and Fire Departments in a search of Fall Creek after the report of a body in the water. The recovery effort is ongoing.”

This is a developing story.
