ITHACA, N.Y. – The City of Ithaca Fire Department was awarded on Tuesday from the Department of Defense, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and the United States Army Reserve for their dedication and support to soldiers employed by the Ithaca Fire Department.

Fire Chief Tom Parsons and Assistant Chief Robert Covert were on hand to accept the award Tuesday night at Ithaca Central Fire Station, which was presented by Captain Don Oeschlin, and Ithaca firefighter and Army Staff Sergeant Russell Vidler.

The Patriotic Employer Award is an opportunity for U.S. Army Reserve soldiers to recognize their employers who have gone above and beyond in their support of employees who also serve in the military. Firefighter Vidler put his Chiefs at IFD up for the accommodation.

“The Ithaca Fire Department is proud of its members who serve in the U.S. Military, both past and present, and are thankful for this honor and award from another group of great men and women who serve their community and country,” IFD stated in a news release.

The City of Ithaca employs many active servicewomen and men as well as veterans of our armed services. Department heads help coordinate the soldier’s time away from work in the city to do their military service while ensuring coverage from other employees who support the program as well.
