ITHACA, N.Y. — A straw poll vote of the Tompkins County Democratic Committee showed that people are initially favoring Tracy Mitrano as the democratic candidate for Congress.

The support for Mitrano comes weeks after a candidate forum where seven people vied for the support of local Democrats, discussing topics such as gun control, health care, environmental issues, the economy, and the opioid epidemic.

The forum was open to all registered democrats in the county. Around 700 people attended the Q&A  and 571 people voted, favoring the candidates as follows:

  • Tracy Mitrano: 297
  • Max Della Pia: 80
  • Ian Golden: 69
  • Linda Andrei: 64
  • Eddie Sundquist: 38
  • Charles Whalen: 22
  • Rick Gallant (not in attendance): 1

According to the local democratic committee, more than 150 people participated in the recent online straw poll, which aligned closely with the results of the congressional forum.

Tracy Mitrano led vote, followed by Max Della Pia and then Ian Golden. Members were asked to select their top three choices for candidates but were not required to do so.

The democratic committee said the vote does not equate an endorsement.

The chart below was provided by the Tompkins County Democratic Committee and shows the results of the straw poll:
