ITHACA, N.Y. — A water main break on the east side of Route 13 between the W. Falls  and Dey St. means that residents in the area will likely have discolored water for a few hours Wednesday.

According to an alert from the city of Ithaca, the break happened just before 11 a.m. and was expected to be fixed within about an hour.

The alert stated, “The break caused high flows in all of water mains in the vicinity resulting in the scouring of old pipes causing many reports of discolored water. Crews are flushing the local distribution system. Affected customers should report discolored water to 607-272-1717 so flushing operations can be more focused. The break will be completely repaired within the hour but the clearing of discolored water from the system could take another 4+ hours.”

The alert was distributed through the county-wide Swift911 system.
