ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca Police Department discovered a homemade pipe bomb in a closet on Wednesday after officers received a call reporting a suspicious package in an Ithaca residence.

According to a news release, IPD responded to a call just after 4:30 p.m. regarding a suspicious package complaint.

Police say the caller, who moved into an apartment on West State Street six weeks ago, reported that he found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in his closet. The caller said he consulted a friend before reporting the package and decided to call the police.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers say they located a device inside the apartment. With help from the Endicott Police Department Bomb Squad, the device was removed and transported to a secure location.

Public Information Officer Jamie Williamson said the device was manually detonated later.

“The device was a homemade pipe bomb that did not appear to have the necessary items to detonate,” he said. “It was rendered in a safe location out of an abundance of caution.”

No charges have been filed at this time.
