ITHACA, N.Y. — Tompkins County Administrator Joe Mareane will retire early and is on medical leave effective Monday.

Mareane had planned to retire Feb. 1, 2018. However on Monday, County Legislature Chair Mike Lane said in a news release that Mareane is taking a medical leave and is moving up his retirement date to Nov. 30.

Mareane has served as county administrator since 2008.

A search has already been already underway to replace Mareane. Until a new administrator is selected, Deputy County Administrator Paula Younger will serve as interim administrator. Younger has worked as deputy administrator for the past 11 years.

 The county administrator serves as the county’s chief executive officer and is appointed by Tompkins County Legislature.
