ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tompkins County SPCA is joining in on the Wizarding Weekend fun and sorting animals into Hogwarts houses for the next four days.
The SPCA said on social media, “All of our animals will bear a house crest on their door and we’ll be waiving the adoption fee for cats only on the day that their house is featured.” The sorting is intended to inform the public more about an animal’s personalty traits.
For all the muggles (non-magical folks) out there, Hogwarts is the name of the school in the internationally acclaimed Harry Potter book and movie series. In the Harry Potter universe, students are placed into one of four houses within the school by the Sorting Hat, a talking hat with the ability to “read” a person’s heart, mind and personality.
Each school values different characteristics in students, which the SPCA is also taking into consideration when sorting the animals into the four houses.
The Sorting Hat, which sings a song at the beginning of every Hogwarts school year, sings the following verses about the houses in the first Harry Potter book:
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry,
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.
The SPCA stated that a new house will be featured each day. Thursday, Gryffindor animals are being featured, meaning Gryffindor cat adoptions fees will be waived.
