ITHACA, N.Y. — Police have arrested a man they say struggled with a woman and tried to steal her backpack Tuesday.

Christopher Hartman, 41, is charged with felony third-degree attempted robbery and being held without bail at the Tompkins County Jail after being arraigned Wednesday morning.

According to police, Hartman was on the 600 block of West Clinton Street when he tried to take a backpack from a woman wearing the item. He struggled with the woman and she bit his arm before he left the area on foot. The woman was able to give police a description of  the man and an officer found Hartman, who matched the description, shortly afterward.

Police said the woman identified Hartman as the man who attacked her. He’s scheduled to appear in court again next week.
