ITHACA, N.Y. — Police have charged a man with shooting a cat in the head with a crossbow back in June.

Phillip Lewis, 27, was charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals and is in custody at the Tompkins County Jail.

According to a court document, Lewis intentionally shot a gray and white long-haired female cat between the eyes, and the arrow pierced through to the cat’s shoulder and back area. Lewis then allegedly chased the injured animal but was unable to catch it.

Lewis was taken into custody on Aug. 21 and is in custody in lieu of posting $1,500 bail or $3,000 bond.

The SPCA stated that the cat was treated at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals where it recovered for several days before a vet student adopted her.
