ITHACA, N.Y. – A Newfield teen was arrested on Monday morning after he was accused of damaging school property earlier this month.

Officials at the Newfield Central School District contacted the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department on July 11 to report damage to the school’s softball field, which had been newly renovated, according to reports.

An unknown person allegedly drove a motor vehicle on the field causing several thousand dollars worth of damage, according to school officials.

Upon looking into the incident further, police said the investigation revealed that Devin M. Austen, 18, operated a motor vehicle around 6 p.m. on July 10 and allegedly caused intentional damage to the field. Three juveniles were also in the vehicle at the time of the incident, according to police.

Austen was arrested Monday morning by Sheriff’s deputies and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony.

He was arraigned in the Town of Newfield Court and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail $5,000 bond. Austen is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Newfield Court on August 3.
