HORSEHEADS, N.Y. — A man is facing multiple charges after police say he was drunk and speeding when he crashed a vehicle in October, seriously injuring one person and killing an Ithaca teen.

Jonathan T. Byrd, 28, is charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree vehicular assault, operation of motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and operating a vehicle while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs and alcohol.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release, “The investigation determined Byrd was traveling over 100 mph while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.”

Police said Byrd was driving a vehicle west on Interstate 86 near the Ithaca exit when he drove off the shoulder and continued several hundred feet, through the grassy median. The vehicle flipped several times and Ithaca teen Luciano M. Servetto, 19, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died at the scene. Passenger Carlton J. Clinton, 32, suffered a severe neck injury.

After being indicted, Byrd was arrested Wednesday and is in custody at the Chemung County Jail.
