ITHACA, N.Y. — Two Ithaca police officers were involved in a collision Monday evening. One police officer was transported to the hospital, but no one involved was seriously injured.

The crash occurred at about 11:40 p.m. Monday at the intersection of West Buffalo and North Fulton streets, police said.

Police say an Ithaca Police Department patrol car was headed south on North Fulton Street and a non-police vehicle was westbound on West Buffalo Street when they collided. Police said an investigation determined that the operator of the non-police vehicle went through a steady red traffic light into the intersection, which caused the collision.

When crews from the Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance arrived, they found the police officer who was operating the patrol car trapped inside. He was extricated from the vehicle, but not seriously injured, the IFD said. The officer was transported to Cayuga Medical Center by ambulance for evaluation, the Ithaca Fire Department said.

Another on-duty police officer was a passenger in the patrol car and suffered several bumps and bruises, but was also not seriously injured, police said.

The operator and passengers of the other vehicle were not injured.

The operator of non-police vehicle admitted to accidentally running the red light and was issued traffic tickets, police said.
