ITHACA, N.Y. — The Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) is beginning its 45th birthday celebration this weekend. Everyone is invited to celebrate with us at the GIAC Festival on Saturday, June 3 from 11 am – 8 pm outside of the GIAC building at 301 W. Court St.  The GIAC Festival is held in collaboration with the Ithaca Festival on the same day and we’ll all be celebrating like it’s our first.

Festivities include exciting performances on the Ithaca Fest stage in front of GIAC from 11 am – 8 pm.  The GIAC Jumpers, featuring singing, dancing and jump rope competition skills will perform at 11 am and 2 pm, along with other GIAC represented performers interwoven with IFest performers including the Jeff Love Band, Nana’s Wassa Pan African Dance Ensemble and the incomparable Ave Mack.

A Mini-Ramp Skateboard Jam will be set up for skateboarders to show off their skills with a Best Trick Contest.  And, yes, the young men will be stepping up their game as they try to win a year of bragging rights in the third annual Prince Jakim & Dominque Summer Basketball Grown Men vs. Young Men Charity Game, 4 pm at the GIAC Basketball Court. The 25 and older grown men are 2-0 and word on the street is they plan to school the young ones again. You don’t want to miss it!

Youth of all ages can enjoy games, bounce houses, and face painting.  Local GIAC Family vendors will have crafts, gifts and more for sale as well as food including hot dogs, hamburgers, snow cones, cotton candy, curry popcorn, soul food, West African food, desserts and Caribbean food. The GIAC Seniors will host their infamous Cake Wheel contest so come play to win cakes. Community organizations will be present with information and giveaways.

If you get too hot from all the activities and dancing you can go cool off in the Alex Haley Municipal Swimming Pool for only a $1 admission special during the GIAC Festival — opening is weather dependent.  Attendees can also visit the GIAC Board of Directors booth to purchase cold water and Alex Haley Pool season passes.  GIAC is proud to have been serving the community for 45 years.

The GIAC Festival is still recruiting volunteers for shifts between 10:45 am – 8:15 pm to assist with the children’s games and activity area and other event support positions.  Please contact Kerry Phillips, Deputy GIAC Director at kphillips@cityofithaca.org or call GIAC at 607-272-3622 or 607-220-3610 for more information about volunteering at the event.  Shifts available to fit all schedules.
