DANBY, N.Y. — A Candor man was found guilty Friday of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl last summer during a harrowing experience at a Danby campsite.

Matthew Williams, 33, was convicted of felony first-degree sex abuse and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.

According to court records, Williams provided two tween girls alcohol while they were at a campsite without their parent’s consent.

During the evening, he sexually abused one of the girls.

Scared, the girls locked him out of a vehicle, but he eventually convinced them to let him inside, court documents say. The girls eventually ended up running away from him and hiding in the woods while he drove up and down the roadway looking for them.

A family friend was able to pick the girls up from the site early the following morning.

Williams was convicted of the crimes during a five-day trial last week and is scheduled to be sentenced at 2 p.m. Aug. 25. He’s currently remanded without bail.
