Ithaca, NY — Taking Action to End the New Jim Crow is the eighth and final event of The New Jim Crow Community Book Read. In coordination with a national call for action on May Day (International Workers’ Day) by #BeyondtheMoment, Tompkins County teens in the Multicultural Resource Center’s Youth Organizing Fellowship will lead a march from the Southside Community Center to the Beverly J. Martin School Gym for the event.

The event will launch a series of action aimed at addressing barriers to reentry from jail and prison — including a new effort by the Ultimate ReEntry Opportunity Initiative to host a Coordinated ReEntry Services Fair, a one-stop-shop for human services for community members returning from incarceration. The coordinated services fair was inspired by the Community Read’s ReEntry Simulation, hosted in January, which simulated the complex barriers returning community members face.

The Community Read began on September 19th, 2017 with a Kick Off Event that drew 400 participants. Over 700 unique participants joined a the seven monthly events and 35 book groups leading up to the May event

Today, The Community Read will announce plants to meet again on May 1st 2018, one year from the final event, to assess the community’s progress toward ending mass incarceration locally.

From 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at the Beverly J Martin School Gym, we’re gathering for the Final New Jim Crow Community Read Event, Taking Action to End the New Jim Crow. At the event, we’re rolling out some major new efforts:

  • Dates for the next communitywide ReEntry Simulation
