ITHACA,N.Y. —Law enforcement from throughout the Tompkins County area turned out Wednesday afternoon for the 3rd annual Ithaca Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Officers and Special Olympics athletes carried the “Flame of Hope” on a route through the city, beginning at the Ithaca Police Department, going through the Ithaca Commons, and wrapping up at a barbecue at Stewart Park.

The event raises awareness and funds for the 2017 Special Olympics New York Summer Games, happening June 16-17 at Siena College in the Capital District Region. Nearly 2,000 Special Olympics New York athletes, coaches and volunteers will be at the event to compete in traditional events, such as basketball, volleyball, track & field, tennis, bowling, gymnastics, swimming and powerlifting.
