ITHACA, N.Y. — A man was transported to a nearby hospital after allegedly trying to intervene in a fight near the intersection of South Meadow and West State streets Wednesday night.
A clerk at the Mobile gas station said that around 10 p.m. a man rushed into the gas station asking for him to call 911 and for something to stop his friend’s bleeding.
The friend, who decline to be named because he feared for his safety, said that two men were fighting near the West State Street entryway to the gas station.
A third man tried to intervene, and the man’s friend told him not to and tried to pull him away.
The friend said the third man hit his friend in the ear, which started bleeding.
At first, the friend said, they both moved away from the fight and didn’t think much of the wound. But when the friend looked at the bloody ear, he said it was split open from the man’s inner ear and down his neck toward his chin.
“My friend’s neck is open like this,” the man said, holding his fingers inches apart.
He said he and his friend did not know the people fighting and were just walking by.
Blood can be seen strewn on the ground near the entryway to the gas station and nearby sidewalk, where the clerk confirmed he saw the men fighting.
A 911 dispatcher said one person was airlifted to a hospital — scanner traffic at the time indicated a Guthrie Helicopter.
Police said suspects fled the area before officers arrived at the scene.
